Physician Burnout: Why I’m Launching The Resilient MD Podcast and YouTube Channel

Physician burnout has become one of the most pressing challenges in modern medicine. It’s a quiet crisis—one that hides behind the smiles of highly capable, compassionate professionals who are simply running out of fuel.

For years, I thought burnout was something that happened to “other people.” Those who weren’t strong enough, disciplined enough, or resilient enough to handle the demands of medicine. I was wrong.

After more than two decades in healthcare, I found myself completely drained. I was overextended, emotionally exhausted, and disconnected from the purpose that once lit me up. I wasn’t thriving—I was surviving. And I know I’m not alone.

That realization was the beginning of something new. It’s why I’m launching The Resilient MD Podcast and YouTube Channel—a space to talk honestly about burnout, resilience, and rediscovering joy in medicine.

Understanding Physician Burnout: More Than Just Fatigue

Before we talk about solutions, let’s define what physician burnout really is—and why it’s not a personal failure.

Burnout isn’t simply about working too many hours or feeling tired. It’s a state of emotional, physical, and mental exhaustion caused by prolonged stress. For physicians, it often shows up as:

  • Emotional exhaustion: Feeling drained, detached, or unable to connect with patients or colleagues.
  • Depersonalization: Losing empathy, compassion, or the ability to find meaning in work.
  • Reduced sense of accomplishment: Feeling ineffective, inadequate, or that your work no longer matters.

The Root of the Problem

While every doctor’s story is different, many of the causes of physician burnout are systemic:

  • Excessive administrative burdens (hello, EMR and prior authorizations)
  • Lack of autonomy in clinical decision-making
  • Long work hours and poor work-life integration
  • Growing patient expectations amid limited time
  • Emotional weight from constant exposure to suffering

These factors combine to create a cycle of depletion that no amount of willpower can fix.

The truth is, burnout isn’t a sign of weakness—it’s a sign that the system is broken.

My Story: From Burnout to Breakthrough

There was a time I believed I could push through anything. I prided myself on being the one who could handle more, do more, and keep smiling through it all.

But over time, the pressure became relentless. The inbox never stopped. The charting piled up. The emotional demands of patient care clashed with the impossible expectations of efficiency. And somewhere along the way, I lost myself.

Then something unexpected happened: I stumbled upon a life coaching podcast.

It was a small moment, but it changed everything. For the first time, I heard someone articulate what I had been feeling—but couldn’t name. I realized that what I was experiencing wasn’t weakness. It was burnout.

Coaching as a Catalyst

Life coaching became the key that unlocked a new perspective.

Through coaching, I learned how to:

  • Recognize and challenge the thoughts that were fueling my exhaustion.
  • Set boundaries without guilt.
  • Reconnect with purpose and passion, both inside and outside of medicine.
  • Rebuild my confidence and rediscover joy in everyday moments.

It was so transformative that I became a certified life coach myself—determined to share these tools with others who felt trapped in the same cycle.

The Birth of The Resilient MD

That journey led to The Resilient MD Podcast and YouTube Channel.

My mission is simple: to help physicians break free from burnout and find resilience—not by working harder, but by healing deeper.

These aren’t abstract theories—they’re real, actionable tools that have worked for me and for countless others in medicine.

Why We Need a New Conversation About Physician Burnout

Let’s be honest—the culture of medicine has long celebrated overwork. We’ve been conditioned to equate exhaustion with dedication and self-sacrifice with success.

But that mindset is destroying us.

The Myth of “Toughing It Out”

Pushing harder isn’t the answer. True resilience isn’t about endurance—it’s about adaptation and recovery.

Resilience means knowing when to rest, when to delegate, and when to say, “enough.” It means understanding that taking care of yourself is not selfish—it’s essential.

The Systemic Shift

Yes, we need structural change in healthcare—policies that promote well-being, reasonable workloads, and mental health support. But change also begins with awareness. By recognizing burnout for what it is and talking about it openly, we start to rewrite the story.

That’s why The Resilient MD exists: to give voice to the silent struggle and create a movement of physicians who are ready to lead from strength, not survival.

Rebuilding from the Inside Out

Healing from physician burnout isn’t a linear process. It takes time, patience, and self-compassion.

But it starts with three simple principles:

1. Awareness

You can’t change what you don’t acknowledge. Notice when you’re feeling detached, cynical, or overly tired. Those are signals—not failures.

2. Boundaries

Boundaries aren’t walls; they’re doors that protect what matters most. Setting limits at work (and at home) gives you the energy to show up as your best self.

3. Alignment

Rediscover what drew you to medicine in the first place. Reconnect with the moments that remind you why this work matters—and align your schedule, energy, and mindset around those values.

When awareness, boundaries, and alignment come together, burnout loses its grip.

Coaching: A Science-Backed Solution to Burnout

You might be wondering—how can coaching really help with physician burnout?

The answer lies in the intersection of neuroscience and mindset. Coaching helps you retrain your brain to recognize and interrupt burnout patterns before they take over.

What the Research Shows

Studies from institutions like the Mayo Clinic and Stanford have found that physicians who participate in coaching programs experience:

  • 25–35% reductions in burnout scores
  • Significant improvements in quality of life
  • Better emotional regulation and resilience
  • Higher job satisfaction and engagement

In short, coaching helps you regain agency in an environment that often feels out of your control.

Creating the Future of Medicine, Together

Imagine a world where physicians don’t just survive medicine—they thrive in it. Meaningful work becomes the norm again. Laughter finds its way back into the break room. Physicians begin leading with presence and purpose—not exhaustion.

That’s the future I want to help create through The Resilient MD.

We deserve to practice in a system that honors our humanity as much as our expertise. And while we can’t fix healthcare overnight, we can start by healing ourselves—one conversation, one boundary, one breath at a time.
